An individual earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was publicly declared, raising questions about potential gains made from non-public details of American actions.

Market Movement in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the close of the month increased in the time leading up to former President Trump stated on January 3rd that the president had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which registered on the site in December and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Trading information shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet the odds had jumped to 11% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the early hours of Saturday, suggesting a sudden change in betting activity immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," said an industry expert.

Several of other individuals also profited significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Grows

Some lawmakers are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation presented on Monday seeks to ban federal workers from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the past few years, with users able to predict everything from elections to politics.

The industry were examined under the previous administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting arena.

An official representative for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
