European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
